Deck builders Sydney: What to look for

Deck builders Sydney: What to look for

Looking for a deck builder in Sydney?

If you choose to invest in a Sustainabuild deck you’ll be getting a far superior product than what most other Sydney deck builders supply.

Find out how our beautiful decks are built to last below.

1. Deck joist protection

Leaves, soil and everything you can think of will find a way in between decking boards, which in turn will rot the deck structure. By using a thin PVC material on the top of your deck joists to disperse and unwanted residue, we can prolong the lifespan of your deck significantly.

2. End grain protection

The section of timber most susceptible to rot is the end grain, which is located on the ends of timbers. The end grain is the open end of the timber which acts as a wick to water and will defy gravity by pulling water upwards into the timber. We call this capillary action.

It's important to protect the ends of timber as there a multiple ways to do it, such as:

  • Treating the end grain with paint on products, which prevent water intrusion
  • When using vertical timber posts, best practice is to raise the timber out and away from the ground. We do this by using galvanized steel stirrups to connect the posts to the concrete footings.

3. Independent structure

Just like any deck, house, or relationship, the most important part of any construction is the foundation, which is exactly why, at Sustainabuild, our team of Sydney deck builders construct decks as an independent structure.

By doing this, water is able to move freely between the deck and the house, and the outer lining of the house is not compromised.

4. Ethically sourced, sustainable timber

Timber is a versatile, strong, beautiful, and sustainable building material.

Here's why we love using timber in our construction projects:

  • It's renewable: With correct forest management, trees are an ever-growing product that replenishes its stock for later use

  • Carbon sequestration: We all remember high school science, don’t we? Basically, carbon sequestration is when a tree absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which helps to reduces greenhouse emissions.

  • Low embodied energy: Compared to the two other most common building materials for structures - concrete and steel - timber requires much less energy to harvest, process, and transport, which results in lower carbon emissions.

At Sustainabuild, our team of Sydney deck builders deliver what we call a “high performance” deck. Our deck constructions are designed to maximise the life span of the structure, all the while transforming your yard into something that is beautiful and comfortable to utilise.
